Where to Start

I often get ask.

What do I need to start my photography business? I want to be a photographer!

Most of aspiring and amateur photographer, have a misconception of what being a photographer is. Its not just shooting and selling pictures. This is just the tip of the iceberg. There is more than shooting and printing. In my personal opinion and my first advice for you if you going to start your business as a photographer. You need to ask yourself 2 questions. This is where you need to start.


Question 1.
Whats going to be my specialty?


What are you going to focus on? Are you going to do Portraiture? Newborn? Stock Photography? Events? Weddings? Fashion/Modeling? Boudoir? There are many categories. I recommend for you to focus on  2 categories. Make one category you main focus and the other your secondary. For example, In my case my specialty is Wedding Photography. My secondary is Portraiture. I have weddings almost all year round,  but there is a slow season and a peak season. When my wedding season is slow. I Advertise and focus on portraits. This keep my work flow and income steady.

Question 2.

What Clientele am I Going to target?

Its very simple. You have to ask your self which clients you are going to go look for . If you are going to do Boudoir, are you going to do females only? or  couples? or just males or maybe all of them. Do u want the high-end clientele or middle class or the lower class? There is nothing wrong if you clientele is the lower or middle or higher class they are all clients. Its just for you to feel right, with a the right people at the right time and work comfortable. I have always selected the middle class as my target clientele. This does not mean that I don't shoot high class or a lower class events . I do . To me they are all clients, but I identify my self better with the middle class clientele. So that's the clientele I target.
